Path of Movement for Cape Hatteras Lighthouse

Due to erosion of the shore, the second tower Cape Hatteras lighthouse was moved from its original location at the edge of the ocean to safer ground 2,870 feet inland. The move began on June 17, 1999. Moving slowly in five-foot increments, the lighthouse was moved in just 23 days. On July 9, 1999 the lighthouse was lowered to on to its new concrete pad, three weeks ahead of schedule.
