Mounds at Fort Raleigh NHS

Fort Raleigh National Historic Site commemorates England's first attempts at New World settlement from 1584 to 1590. A 1587 expedition at this site included women and children, and resulted in the birth of the first English child in the New World – Virginia Dare on August 15, 1587. Shortly thereafter, a team went back to England for supplies but their return was substantially delayed by the hostilities between the Spanish and the English. When they did finally return in 1590, no trace of the 116 persons left behind could be found, giving rise to the legend of the “Lost Colony”.
