The Route

The trip was pretty much a simple out and back from Wichita to the Outer Banks. We headed down through Tulsa and joined I-40. We stuck with I-40 all the way through most of NC, until it dove south at Raleigh, then we were on US-64. Our return route was more or less the same. We stopped at Mark + Marcy's in Knoxville going both directions.

Cold and Rainy Day

It was rainy and cold the day we left home, Wednesday, September 3rd. We were actually enduring the remains of Hurricane Gustav. We were driving east, and of course the remains of the storm were moving east as well, so we drove in rain the entire day before stopping for the night in Memphis. One kind of interesting side note is that at one point we noted the wind direction shift, meaning we’d passed abeam the remains of the eye. Thank goodness, the weather was considerably better the next day, though we still were in rain for several hours after departing Memphis.

Great Smokey Mountains Tremont

Since Tropical Storm Hanna was due to hit the Outer Banks on Saturday September 6th we delayed our arrival there by on day. Instead of hitting the road east-bound, on Friday, Mark, Virginia, + I went over to the Smokies, about a 45 minute drive away.

Three Cascading Falls

The next bunch of shots were all taken in the Tremont area of the Great Smokey Mountains National Park.
